Only A Pavement Away, the hospitality sector charity aiding prison leavers, veterans and those facing homelessness back into employment, has partnered with research and insight consultancy KAM, to launch the Deborah Moses Turnaround Pathway Bursary, a new resource available to prison leavers employed through Only A Pavement Away, catered to support their professional and personal development.

Set up to honor the great work done by Deborah Moses with prisoners and prison leavers throughout her career, first applications for the bursary will be reviewed from 1st February 2023 by a panel of industry experts including Deborah’s daughter and KAM founder and MD, Katy Moses, Ben Moses, Think Hospitality Managing Director, James Hacon, Lucky Saint Managing Director, Emma Heal and Only A Pavement Away Head of Employment Partnerships, Dolores Panetier.

KAM and Only A Pavement Away will both be donating £2,000 to the bursary, with funding available to successful applicants, to help them develop and progress in their career in hospitality. Whether it’s an Only A Pavement Away member new to back-of-house keen to take on an advanced pastry course or a budding sommelier eager to gain WSET qualifications, the Deborah Moses Turnaround Pathway Bursary will help prison leavers employed through Only A Pavement Away kick start their development and career progression.

Katy Moses, Founder and MD of KAM said, KAM is proud to be partnering with Only a Pavement Away to launch the Turnaround Pathway Bursary in honour of my late Mother, who spent the last 15 years of her life teaching in prisons. She believed that everybody should get a second chance- and that education was key to the rehabilitation of offenders. We hope that this bursary will continue the good work that she did, and give ex-offenders an opportunity to learn key skills to further their lives in a positive way after release.”

The Deborah Moses Turnaround Pathway Bursary will build on the important training and development Only A Pavement Away already delivers for prisoners and prison leavers in the UK, with the charity having launched its ‘Sponsor a Kitchen’ project earlier this year, with investment from Greene King and Gaucho. This project will see the refurbishment of two prison kitchens at Thameside and Pentonville transforming them into a facility that reflects the appearance and standards of the hospitality industry, where serving prisoners can be taught the skills and behaviours required to work in a professional kitchen. With momentum already behind the project, Only A Pavement Away plans to extend ‘Sponsor a Kitchen’ from 2 prisons in 2022 to 15 by mid-2024.

Greg Mangham, CEO Only A Pavement Away, said: “It is a great privilege to help launch this bursary and allocate this important funding in honour of Deborah Moses. KAM and Only A Pavement Away partner on a lot of vital work but this bursary is perhaps the most poignant. We hope the Deborah Moses Turnaround Pathway Bursary will be available to prison leavers employed through Only A Pavement Away for many years to come, and we can’t wait to see how this funding helps recipients progress in their respective careers.”

Only A Pavement Away is seeking hospitality partners interested in supporting the charity as part of its ESG commitment to help people facing homelessness, prison leavers and veterans develop life skills, become job ready and provide them with a direct route into employment.

About Only A Pavement Away

Only A Pavement Away was established by hospitality industry consultant, Greg Mangham & his wife Gill, on World Homeless Day, 10th October 2018, to help those facing homelessness, prison leavers and veterans, find employment in the hospitality industry.

Its bespoke hospitality Jobs Board - which is free of charge - has been developed to help streamline and alleviate the burden of the processes that employers go through in employing people who are struggling to reconnect with society. To date, the charity has placed over 250 people into work, adding an approximate value of £5m to the economy through reduced government support, financial independence and household expenditure. It has ambitious plans in place to support a further 1,000 people - who are either experiencing or at risk of homelessness - into work over the next 2 years.

In addition, the financial impact and benefit to the hospitality sector would reach;

• 1000 Members add c. £34mil to the economy (£38,724 per Member, ROI of 97.7%), saving employers c.£125k in recruitment costs whilst adding c.£78mil in revenue.

• 2000 Members add c.£68mil to the economy, saving employers c.£250k in recruitment costs whilst adding c.£156mil in revenue.

• 5000 Members add c.£ 170mil to the economy, saving employers c.£625k in recruitment costs whilst adding c.£390mil in revenue.
